How music relates to our lives?

There are so many attributes to a person’s daily life that blend into our routine and we get used to it. However, when such an attribute dissociates from us we realize it’s importance. Music is one of these aspects of life. The ubiquitous nature of music makes us oblivious of its elemental necessity in our lives. The notes of music are so entwined with us that it is hard to imagine our life without it.

Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence. A famous 20th century composer said that there is no noise only sound.[1] Ranging from the chirping of a bird to screeching of tires, sound is produced from a multitude of sources and music gives an interpretation to each of them. It has been proven that music enables us to work better, feel good and live life resourcefully. I was trying to figure out, why music affects us so much and this is what I have gathered from my perception of music.

The common elements of music are: Pitch, Rhythm, Dynamics and Sonic quality.[1] Dividing my analysis into these components, it is easier to understand how we feel good on listening some notes, how our mind automatically gets attracted to a particular note when we are in certain kind of mood and so on. Now coming to our first section, Pitch, which refers to the harmony of music that can relate to the peace of our mind. When our mind is frustrated and we feel confused, we are attracted to high pitch music. On the other hand, when we try to extract our mind from this discomfiture, we try to listen to some slow music like Ghazals(a poetic form consisting of rhythmic couplets and refrain), which have a low pitch.

Further on, we get to Rhythm that is more perceivable in terms of its ability to affect our lives. Rhythm is directly related to the orderliness in our work. A good rhythm leads to an organized behavior else there is chaos all around. For example, our work is systematic when in a silent atmosphere because there is an imperceptible cadence in silence, whereas if there is noise of children or traffic around us, the job at hand is characterized by certain level of disorder.

The third constituent is Dynamics which plays a key role in deciding the essence of our living. When we point someone out as having a loud personality, we might make that judgement based on their tawdry attire, their overzealous nature and garrulous conversations. Such characters often would have the liking for loud music too. The reverse can be said about people who are reserved. We would rarely see someone with a quiet nature to be listening to a death metal band while he is alone. Surely, in front of others one might pretend to like some activities to be part of a group. Sonic quality seems to talk about the overall packaging of these three components and hence, would cover similar aspects as have been discussed.

All these notions have been developed as a means of my own understanding of human nature and how music plays a crucial role in building our personalities. We can use music as a tool to enlighten our lives, calm our nerves when we feel distressed, pacify us down when we feel overexcited and boost our spirits when we feel low. We just need to be in the groove!
